Format: Full-time or part-time

Delivery: Choice of fully online or hybrid (combination of in-person and online). Online courses are held at scheduled meeting times, not self-paced.

Duration: 12 weeks (full-time) or 6 months (part-time)

Entrance requirements

This program has no formal entrance requirements, but we strongly recommend that all students have the following before entering the program:

  • Basic computer skills: Should be able to confidently use a computer, including browsing the internet and checking email.
  • Software experience: Should have some prior experience using MS Word and Excel.
  • English skills: Should be comfortable working, writing, and conversing in English. CLB level 8 or one of 麻豆传媒's degree/diploma level English language proficiency standards is recommended, but documentation of your English level is not required for admission.


Computer requirements

  • You will need a computer or laptop (PC or Mac) with reliable internet access and up-to-date software. View 麻豆传媒's technical requirements for online courses here.
  • A webcam and microphone are not required, but they are recommended if you would like to communicate directly with your instructor during class. 
  • We recommend having two computer monitors so you can view your online class while following along with activities.


Software

You can choose to study either Sage 50 or QuickBooks in this program. If you are registering in one of the bundled programs, please make note of which software will be studied in that bundle.

  • Sage 50: Students studying Sage 50 will access it through , an application that works on both Mac and PC. However, students planning to use SAGE 50 professionally after graduating should note that this software is not Mac-compatible.
  • QuickBooks: Courses on QuickBooks study the cloud-based software QuickBooks Online. You will be able to access QuickBooks Online regardless of whether you use a Mac or a PC.

Your instructor will provide more information on how to access the software for your course.

Please note that other programs, such as Excel, may display differently on Mac.

 

Program outline

Formats to choose from

  • The part-time option allows you to complete the program in as soon as 6 months, but you have up to 3 years if needed.

  • The accelerated option is full time and allows you to complete the program in 12-16 weeks, depending on the bundle you choose to register for. This option is intensive and fast-paced, requiring a full-time commitment.

Please note that students in the accelerated program cannot swap accelerated courses for part-time courses.

All versions of this program are regularly offered in a fully online format. Please note that all online classes are synchronous, meaning that students must attend online classes via video call at the scheduled times. Class time may include offline and self-directed activities.


Courses

To earn the Bookkeeping for Small Business certificate, you must successfully complete the following six courses. We recommend taking them in this order:

  • Microsoft Excel Level I
  • Bookkeeping Level I
  • Bookkeeping Level II
  • Payroll Accounting
  • Computerized Accounting Level I or QuickBooks Level I*
  • Computerized Accounting Level II or QuickBooks Level II*

*Choose between Computerized Accounting and QuickBooks. Computerized Accounting Level I and Level II study Sage 50. QuickBooks Level I and QuickBooks Level II study QuickBooks Online.

You must achieve a minimum grade of B in each course to complete the certificate. Students who do not achieve a minimum grade of B in a course may register again to repeat the course.

You must complete all required courses within three years in order to earn the certificate.


Practicum

This program has an optional practicum. After you have completed all six courses, you can register for the practicum to gain valuable workplace experience and practice the skills you learned in the classroom. Please note the practicum's tuition fee is not included in the cost of the bundled program.

Graduation

When you've completed all six required courses and met the grade requirements, you can apply for graduation by following the instructions here. Please note there is a graduation application fee.

Once your graduation application is approved, the Office of the Registrar will contact you by email when your parchment is ready to be picked up.
